Weekend Website Bootcamp

Edit vs Edit with Elementor

4 minutes

In this lesson, you’ll learn the important difference between Edit and Edit with Elementor when managing your website pages. Using the wrong option can cause serious layout issues — but don’t worry! If it happens, it’s easily fixable. Here’s how to handle it properly.

Step 1: Understanding the Two Edit Options

  • Edit with Elementor:

    • Use this when you want to update or change the design, layout, or content inside Elementor.

    • This is the option you should almost always use when editing a page you built with Elementor.

  • Edit (WordPress Editor):

    • Only use this if you need to change something outside the page design, like:

      • Adding or changing a featured image.

      • Editing page attributes (like setting a parent page).

      • Writing an excerpt.

    • Do not make content edits here unless you are trained on how WordPress blocks work.

Step 2: How to Edit a Page Correctly

  • Navigate to Pages > All Pages inside WordPress.

  • Hover over the page you want to edit (e.g., About Page).

  • Always click Edit with Elementor to open the page design editor.

  • Avoid clicking just Edit unless you know you need to adjust a non-Elementor setting.

Step 3: What Happens If You Click the Wrong Edit Button

  • If you click Edit instead of Edit with Elementor, you’ll see a warning message.

  • If you continue anyway:

    • WordPress may convert your page to Gutenberg blocks.

    • The layout will break — images, text, and structure may appear incorrectly.

  • If you accidentally make edits in the wrong editor:

    • Do not panic!

    • Simply go back to All Pages, find your page, and click Edit with Elementor.

    • Elementor will usually restore your original design automatically.

Step 4: How to Safely Confirm Your Page Is Fixed

  • After reopening in Elementor, make a small update (like typing a space and deleting it).

  • Click Update/Publish.

  • Visit the live page and refresh it.

  • Confirm that everything looks the way it’s supposed to.

Homework & Action Items

  • Practice opening a page with Edit with Elementor and making a small safe edit (e.g., changing a word or adjusting a margin).

  • Practice opening a page with Edit and finding the Featured Image section — but do not edit the page layout.

  • Review each of your pages and confirm that you can easily find and click the correct edit button.

  • If you accidentally open a page incorrectly, practice using Edit with Elementor to fix it and re-save.

You did great.
